Dr. Anshu Jamsenpa, 43, from Arunachal Pradesh, has climbed Mount Everest five times. Anshu is the first woman mountaineer to climb Mount Everest twice in the same season in just five days. This is the record for the fastest double ascent of the highest peak by a woman, which is in the name of Anshu Jamsenpa. She has been awarded the Padma Shri on Republic Day in the year (2021) for this stupendous achievement.
Dr. Anshu was born in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh. Her father is a police officer on the Indo-Tibet border and her mother is a nurse.
Dr. Anshu is a resident of Bomdila in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. She comes from the Monpa clan of the Bomdila area. Before marriage, she lived in Gohpur in the Sonitpur district and her name was Deepika Kalita. Her husband, Sering Wang is the president of the Arunachal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association. She is the mother of two daughters.
She started mountaineering in 2009. Seeing Anshu's talent, the people of the Arunachal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association encouraged her to climb Mount Everest. And once she started climbing Everest, there was no looking back.
On May 12, 2011, Dr. Anshu conquered her first Mount Everest by climbing it. And within a span of 10 days i.e. on May 21, 2011, created history by climbing Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, for the second time. She was the first woman in the world to climb a double ascent, a mother, and a female climber. During her expedition, she passed through the difficult climbs of Chao La (5330 m), Reno (5360 m), and Kangma La (5533 m).
Dr. Anshu started her third ascent on 13th May 2013 at 1.45 am and scaled three peaks of the Himalayas namely Lobuche (6119m), Pokhalde (5896m), and Iceland (6189m) at 9am on 18th May 2013.
On 2 April 2017, after taking blessings from the 14th Dalai Lama, she started her Everest climbing expedition from Guwahati. She took 38 days to acclimatize at Everest Base Camp (17,600 ft) and started her main track on 4th April at 9:15 am on 16 May, along with 17 other climbers, she scaled Mount Everest for the fourth time the Indian National Flag Hoisted on 19th May, she started her fifth ascent and second difficult tour of the season with Phari Sherpa, a Nepali climber. She tracked continuously till 10 am without any interruption and started climbing again the next morning, finally reaching the top at 7:45 am on 21 May 2017.
Dr. Anshu Jamsenpa created history by achieving the title of the fastest double climb in 118 hours 15 minutes, about 5 days.
For this title, the Government of Arunachal Pradesh recommended her name for the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award. President Ram Nath Kovind presented the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award to Dr. Anshu Jamsenpa at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on 25 September 2018.
Dr. Anshu Jamsenpa became the brand ambassador of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” (2012-13). She is the brand ambassador of North East Tourism.
Dr. Anshu was awarded the CNN-IBN Young Indian Leader Award by Jyotiraditya Scindia, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (India) on 30 June 2011 in New Delhi.
On 2 June 2012, she was awarded the Woman Achiever of the Year 2011–12 by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in Guwahati.
On 31 January 2017, she was awarded the Tourism Icon of the Year Award by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh at a function held at I G Park Itanagar, where Governor Padmanabha Acharya was the chief guest.
Dr. Anshu Jamsenpa was awarded Ph.D. by Arunachal University of Studies for his achievements in field adventure sports and to make the field proud.
Apart from scaling the summit, Dr. Anshu is training mountaineers and has trained over 3,000 candidates in her capacity. She aims to open an institute that can help people train in adventure sports as well as mountaineering.
