Journey of Life
Anita Gupta from Arrah, Bihar has arranged for the training of over 50,000 rural women in handicrafts, embroidery, and jewelry.
Anita Gupta comes from a poor family. She saw and understood at a young age how weak and expendable women are in Indian society.
Her father died when she was a child, and she went to live with her maternal grandparents along with her mother and six siblings. After the death of all three of her grandfather's sons, her grandfather bought a young girl from her parents to take care of their need and desire for a son.
She saw her grandfather mercilessly beating the girl whom she had brought to raise her children. This sentence left an indelible impression on her mind. The question started coming into her mind that if the girl was educated then she would have got the right to protest against the misbehavior meted out to her.
In 1993, just 10-year-old Anita Gupta, along with her younger brother Santosh Kumar, founded Bhojpur Mahila Kala Kendra with a mission to empower rural women by providing them education and employment training.
The siblings, who lost their parents at a very young age, again toured Bihar and spread awareness among the women in the villages.
She encouraged women to join the organization and said that if they earn money then only they can send their children to school.

Faced many difficulties in the beginning
A time when women were not ready to step out of their homes. Her life revolved only around her domestic duties and taking care of her family.
At that time she was not even allowed to meet women in a village. She had to take the permission of the head of the family to talk to women. They mostly used to ask her to get out. And do not allow to talk to women even for a minute. The men there did not want their women to earn a living or create an identity of their own. She used to warn them that 'our women will not remove the veil'.
Gradually, full of determination and confidence, Anita Gupta was able to form a group of women to provide training and education. Today these women trained by her are able to improve their lives. Some women have opened their own boutiques while some have associated with schools to provide training to other women. Some women have also formed groups for mushroom cultivation by cooperating with each other and selling them in the market.
Anita's primary goal was to educate and provide skill development training to the women of her area first and then to others in the surrounding villages. Bringing women into empowerment is not an easy task, and that too in a state like Bihar faces the limits of prevailing patriarchy.
She was disregarded by the villagers but did not stop her journey.
In the year 2000, Amitabh Verma, a senior IAS officer, who saw her struggles for the upliftment of women, helped her register Bhojpur Mahila Kala Kendra to get government assistance.
After being registered as an institution, the organization was changed so that it could get financial assistance from the government.
Her organization then got the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and the DC Handicrafts Government of India as partners.
Gradually, Bhojpur Mahila Kala Kendra sought help from the government to start handicraft training for rural women. At present, the jewelry made by rural women is sold at various government fairs. Along with this, the products prepared by women are also supplied to various shops located in Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, and other cities.
This organization is located in Arrah. Under this, employment opportunities have been created for 10,000 women.
She established over 500 self-help groups (SHGs) to organize health check-up camps, provide adult education, and vocational training, and create awareness programs on water usage and sanitation.
She is also a member of Usha Silai School in Bihar and Jharkhand, where she imparts training on sewing machines.
