Biography of Kalpana Dutt dedicated to the country in Indian independence Movements

On 15 August 2022, the Amrit Mahotsav of the 75th anniversary of Independence Day is being celebrated across India. The campaign of tricolor in every house is being run across the country.

On the occasion of Independence Day, tribute is paid to all those brave soldiers and women who sacrificed their lives or played an important role in the freedom struggle.

In the fight for freedom, not only men but also women have made the British chew iron gram on the strength of their courage and strength.

Many women devoted to the country and desirous of freedom had participated in the Indian independence movements.

Along with this, a large number of women activists went from village to village and inspired the people of the country to join the freedom movement.

There were some revolutionaries who neither got that fame nor their names could be recorded in the pages of history but their contribution cannot be forgotten.

Kalpana Dutt has a name in this episode. Kalpana Dutt is an Indian freedom fighter. She took on the British fearlessly.

Kalpana Dutt played an important role in the freedom movement, walking step by step with the revolutionaries of Bengal. She used to deliver ammunition to the revolutionaries in disguise. She was also trained in marksmanship.

Early Life

Kalpana Dutt was born on 27 July 1913 in a middle-class family in Sripur village of Chittagong, Bengal. Her father's name was Vinod Bihari Dutt.

She did her early education in Chittagong only. After passing the matriculation examination, she decided to continue further studies in the science subject. She took admitted to Bethune College, Calcutta in 1929. Meanwhile, she started reading biographies of revolutionaries.

Revolutionary Activities

The stories of the revolutionaries had such a deep impact on her life that she got involved in the activities of the student union right from her student days. During this, she met revolutionary women like Bina Das and Pritilata Waddedar. After that, she started getting involved in revolutionary activities continuously.

Meanwhile, she met Master Surya Sen and she joined her party 'Indian Republican Army'. Master Surya Sen is also known as 'Master Da'.

Kalpana Dutt was greatly influenced by the ideas of Surya Sen. In this way she became a part of the freedom struggle and launched her campaign against the British.

Kalpana Dutt used to deliver ammunition to the revolutionaries in disguise.

In 1930, her group looted the Chittagong Library. But during this time due to coming in the eyes of the British, she had to leave her studies and return to Chittagong. And from there quietly kept in touch with this team. Many revolutionaries with her were arrested by the British.

She started secretly delivering explosives and weapons to the people of the organization in Chittagong.

Planned to blow up the jail

Kalpana Dutt planned to bomb the jail to get the people of the organization released from the British rulers.

Revolutionary women like Pritilata were also involved in her plan.

For this, she also needed weapons training. That's why she used to go to Suryasen's village in the silence of the night and started regular practice in revolver shooting with Pritilata.

They planned an attack on the European Club in Chittagong in September 1931. She had changed her disguise to carry out the attack. Unfortunately, the plan was discovered by the police and she was arrested.

But she was released due to not being proven guilty. However, due to apprehension later, the police were guarded by the British at her house.

Where was Kalpana Dutt going to believe even after being guarded outside the house, she became nine-two-eleven by throwing dust in the eyes of the police. And ran away and met Surya Sen.

When sentenced to life Imprisonment

Kalpana Dutt continued to carry out various movements for two years along with fellow revolutionary Surya Sen. On 17 February 1933, her associate Surya Sen was arrested.

While Kalpana Dutt managed to escape along with her accomplice Manindra Dutta. For a few months, she kept hiding here and there, but in May 1933 she was surrounded by the police.

Kalpana Dutt and her associates were also arrested after a brief encounter.

In the year 1934, Suryasen and his companions were hanged. And 21-year-old Kalpana Dutt was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Being sentenced to life imprisonment meant that she could no longer be a part of any freedom movement to fight for freedom. But something else was written along the lines of her fate.

Released from Life Sentence

In 1937, ministries were formed in the states. During that time a campaign to free the revolutionaries was started by Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore etc. When this movement became fierce, the British had to release some revolutionaries of Bengal. Kalpana Dutt was also one of those revolutionaries.

After coming out of jail, Kalpana Dutt completed her studies at Calcutta University. Later, her inclination increased toward the Communist Party.

In 1943, Kalpana Dutt married Puran Chand Joshi, general secretary of the Communist Party of India. And now Kalpana Dutt had become Kalpana Joshi.

At this time Bengal was struggling with famine and partition. Then Kalpana Joshi also did many relief works for the people here.

She gave birth to two sons, whose names were Chand Joshi and Suraj Joshi. Her son Chand Joshi has been a very big journalist.

Politics not frozen

Kalpana Dutt also played an active role in politics. In the year 1943, she was also made a candidate for the assembly elections on behalf of the Communist Party, but she could not succeed in winning the assembly elections. However, due to differences in the party, she left the party.

After keeping away from politics, she wrote her autobiography based on the Chittagong loot case. And after that, she started working in a statistics institute.

Then she came to Delhi from Bengal. Here she became a part of the Indo-Soviet Cultural Society.

Death

Kalpana Dutt breathed her last on 8 February 1995 in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal.

After her death, in 2010, Ashutosh Gowariker made a film based on her life. The name of the film was 'Khele Hum Ji Jaan Se'. Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan played the lead roles in the film.

Her son Chand Joshi's wife Manini wrote a novel on Kalpana Dutt titled 'Do and Die: Chattogram Rebellion'. And the story of the film was taken from her novel.

In the year 1979, Kalpana Dutt was awarded the title of 'Veer Mahila' in Pune.
