Meet Lady Tarzan of Jharkhand planted saplings is decorating the land

Failures can give failure to the one whose morale is strong. But with constant effort and self-confidence, the path to success can be unveiled.

Lady Tarzan Chami Murmu is full of patience, faith, and courage. Are protecting the environment. In its efforts of 33 years, it has so far planted more than 27 lakh saplings. Empowering women by showing them opportunities for self-employment.

Chami Murmu continues to campaign against illegal logging, timber mafia, and poaching of animals in the forest. Because of running a campaign against Naxalites, it is called Lady Torzen.

Chami Murmu was born in 1973 to mother Nani Murmu and father Dhanu Murmu. She is from Baghraisai village, Rajnagar block of Seraikela Kharsawan district, Jharkhand. A women's conference was organized in her village in 1988 by ITI Patmada. She attended that conference and understood the importance of environmental protection. Came to the conference and took 9 more women along with them toward their goal.

She formed her own group of 10 women and kept on organizing meetings from time to time.

Every day she went from village to village making women aware of the environment. This group of women held the first 10 successful meetings. But being a woman, she also faced opposition from the villagers. It was forbidden for women to go out of the house and do something. Chami Murmu neither lost nor stopped. When people did not allow her to sit in the car to go from one village to another, she continued to travel on foot.

Chami Murmu had to do something better, in 1989 she got the task of doing 1 lakh nurseries. Seizing the opportunity, she along with her group planted the seeds and grew the saplings with proper care. Now she was asked to plant those plants in her village. The villagers were apprehensive about losing their land, but by convincing everyone, she was successful in her work.

Started to adapt the barren land of the village to farming. With her efforts and hard work, she was successful in making the barren land green. Where there is no Anganwadi center, she works to deliver nutrition.

Chami Murmu formed a cooperative women's organization in Baghraisai, Rajnagar. Her organization was registered in 1992. She is working to train women and connect them with self-employment.

Chami Murmu, on behalf of her organization, is working to make women financially strong by giving them the benefits of various types of self-employment schemes including goat rearing, chicken rearing, and poultry rearing. By distributing mustard, potato, wheat, etc. seeds to women, they motivate them for farming.

Chami Murmu has so far given self-employment to 30 thousand women by forming a group of 2900 women through Baghraisai, a cooperative women's organization in the Kolhan region.

She has beautified the environment and the earth by planting more than 27 lakh saplings on 720 hectares of land. Making the barren land green. Along with this, the economic condition of the people improves and the environment is not harmed, for this water harvesting promotes the process.

She has done an incredible amount of selfless work to protect the local wildlife and protect the forests from the timber mafia. Has also actively worked against Naxalites.

Chami Murmu is also a Zila Parishad member of Rajnagar Block Part-16.

Chami Murmu is unmarried. Her parents always encouraged her in her work for women's self-respect and social service.

Chami Murmu was awarded the Indira Gandhi Vriksha Mitra Award in the year 1996 for her unique work in environmental protection.

Chami Murmu was awarded Chaibasa Ratna by Social Coordination Committee Chaibasa in 1999, a felicitation letter from Singhbhum Kshetriya Gramin Bank, a letter of honor by Tribal Association, Safdar Hashmi Samman from Bharatiya Jannatya Sanstha Chaibasa.

Chami Murmu was awarded the Nari Shakti Samman by President Ram Nath Kovind in a program organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan for her outstanding contribution to the environment and women's empowerment on 8 March 2020 International Women's Day. On this occasion, she was awarded Rs 2 lakh and a citation.
