Meet Geeta Gopinath first woman to become the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

Veteran economist Geeta Gopinath is the first woman to become the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

She has been made the first Deputy Managing Director of the IMF. This is the second position in the IMF. She is the first woman to hold this post in the history of the IMF.

She did extraordinary work to overcome the global economic recession during the Corona epidemic.

When the whole world was locked in their homes due to Corona, she played a big role in saving the world from economic recession.

Geeta Gopinath played a very important role in planning how to control the Corona epidemic and move towards achieving the target of vaccination all over the world.

It was on her strategy that the IMF, World Bank, WTO, and World Health Organization together formed a multilateral task force and solved the problems ranging from vaccine manufacturing to its distribution.

She is also known at the international level for her research related to International Finance and Microeconomics. Much of her research has also been published in economics journals.

She has written about 40 research papers on trade and investment, international financial crisis, currency policies, debt, and emerging markets problems.

In the year 2019, Geeta Gopinath was honored with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman. This is the highest honor given by the Government of India to foreigners of Indian origin.

Geeta Gopinath knows many languages, the main ones being Hindi, English, American English, Kannada, Malayali, etc. She believes in God and has full faith in Indian culture.

Early Life

Indian-American Geeta Gopinath was born on 8 December 1971 in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Her parents were originally from Kannur, Kerala.

She is the younger of two sisters, her elder sister's name is Anita Gopinath.

She grew up in Mysore, Karnataka. Her father TV Gopinath is a farmer and entrepreneur. Her mother V.C. Vijayalakshmi is an entrepreneur who runs a play school.

In the year 1980, her parents settled in Mysore, Karnataka. At that time Geeta Gopinath was nine years old. Her parents enrolled her in class four at Nirmala Convent School, Mysore, and she completed her schooling from there.

Got 45% Marks in the Fourth Class

Geeta Gopinath, currently a resident of America, was not very good in studies till the fourth class.

Her father Gopinath had told in an interview given to The Week that till the seventh class, only 45% marks were obtained for Geeta. But after this, she became better in her studies and started scoring up to 90% marks.

Education

After school, Geeta Gopinath studied science at Maharaja PU College in Mysore. Her marks were good and she could have chosen engineering or medical field. But she did a B.A. in Economics. Decided to do Honors.

She studied Honors in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. She completed her B.A. in 1992. Took an Honors degree. And then did a postgraduation in Economics from Delhi School of Economics.

After this, in 1994 she went to Washington University. There, from 1996-2001, she did her PhD in Economics from Princeton University.

Career

Geeta Gopinath worked as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago from 2001 to 2005. After this, she joined Harvard University as an Assistant Professor.

Till 2010, she remained in the post of Assistant Professor at Harvard University. Then she was appointed to the post of professor there.

Geeta Gopinath is the first woman to hold the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics in the Department of Economics at Harvard University.

In the year 2015, she joined the post of Professor of International Studies and Economics.

On 21 July 2016, economist Geeta Gopinath was appointed as the Financial Advisor to the Chief Minister of Kerala.

In 2018, she became the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Geeta Gopinath is the second Indian to be appointed to this important post of IMF. Before this, the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Shri Raghuram Rajan had also been the Chief Economist of IFM.

She has also been editor of the American Economic Review and co-director of International Finance and Microeconomics at the National Bureau of Economics Research (NBER).

It is the result of her efficiency that Geeta Gopinath was appointed to the post of Economic Advisor and Director of the IMF Research Department.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Economist Gita Gopinath was promoted as the organization's first Deputy Managing Director (FDMD) in January 2022.

She has replaced Geoffrey Okamoto. This is the first time that a person of Indian origin has reached this position in the IMF.

Geeta Gopinath had earlier wanted to leave IMF. She was planning to return to Harvard University to teach again in January 2022, but will now serve at the IMF.

Apart from this, Geeta Gopinath is also a member of the elected and executive groups of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society.

She was also a member of the Economic Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Personal Life

Geeta Gopinath is very interested in sports. She has learned to play the guitar.

During postgraduation, she met Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal. During that time both were preparing for the UPSC exam.

Geeta Gopinath failed to pass the UPSC exam, but Iqbal Singh passed the UPSC exam became an IAS, and was posted in the Tamil Nadu cadre.

Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal was the first rank holder in the UPSC Civil Services Examination of 1995. After becoming IAS, he served the country for 4 years, but then he left the IAS job.

Both of them got married in 1999. Her husband Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal is the Global Executive Director of J-PAL.

The couple has a son named Rahil.
