India's rocket woman Ritu Karidhal Srivastava, an integral part behind the success of Chandrayaan-3

The success of Chandrayaan-3 is a matter of pride and excitement for every Indian.

There is a woman leading the Chandrayaan-3 mission which adds to this pride. It is also a sign that the women of the country are moving forward, which is necessary for the progress of the country.

Chandrayaan-3 mission was launched from Sriharikota Satish Dhawan Space Center in Andhra Pradesh with the objective of the Moon exploration mission.

Chandrayaan-3 was successfully launched on July 14 at 2.35 pm Indian time. Its objective is to locate and learn about the South Pole of the Moon.

Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the lunar surface on 23 August. Which is a big achievement for the country's space activities.

From the Indian public to politicians, everyone is lauding the team of scientists behind the Chandrayaan-3 mission for ISRO's historic achievement. Around 54 women engineers and scientists were part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Who handled many important responsibilities.

This mission is led by one of the senior scientists of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Ritu Karidhal Srivastava did it.

Who is Ritu Karidhal Srivastava?

Ritu Karidhal Srivastava is an Indian scientist and aerospace engineer. She was also the Deputy Operations Director of India's Mars Orbiting Mission, Mangalyaan.

She is also called the "Rocket Woman" of India.

Ritu Karidhal was born on 13 April 1975 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in a family where they understood the importance of education. Her father worked in defense services.

If the mindset of every family living in India becomes positive towards education, then there will be a brilliant person in every house. And the country will progress and make progress every day.

Since childhood, Ritu Karidhal had a great interest in knowing about the moon, stars, and space. She often gazed at the sky at night, with a strong desire to understand the reason for the increasing and decreasing size of the moon every night. Her curiosity to study stars always inspired her to understand more and more about space.

She would collect cuttings from newspapers regarding all the space-related activities of NASA and ISRO.

Education

Ritu Karidhal received her education from Navyug Girls College. She received her B.Sc., graduation degree in Physics from Lucknow University. And received an M.Sc., post-graduation degree in Physics.

And joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to pursue her master's degree in Aerospace Engineering.

Then he studied for a Ph.D. in physics. Six months later, she passed the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam. After this Ritu Karidhal left her PhD studies and moved towards space exploration.

Career

Ritu Karidhal joined ISRO in 1997 under the guidance of Professor Manisha Gupta.

At UR Rao Satellite Center (URSC), her educational background and exceptional performance at IISc have led her to challenging roles. Where she fearlessly tackled advanced projects usually reserved for senior scientists.

Ritu Karidhal's leadership journey started with the Mars Orbiter Mission - Mangalyaan. She was appointed as Deputy Director in this mission.

This mission was launched on 5 November 2013. This mission took 10 months to complete. Which was completed at a cost of less than Rs 450 crore.

Which is one of the important achievements of ISRO. With the success of this mission, India became the fourth country in the world to reach Mars.

Subsequently, Ritu Karidhal took over as Mission Director when Chandrayaan-2 was successfully launched on July 22, 2019.

When the United Kingdom assumed the presidency of the G7 in 2021, Ritu Karidhal Srivastava was appointed by the country's Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss, to the newly formed Gender Equality Advisory Council (GEAC), chaired by Sarah Sands.

Leading Chandrayaan-3 is another milestone in his illustrious career.

He has published more than 20 papers in both national and international journals.

Awards and Honors

Ritu Karidhal Srivastava has been honored with many awards and honors for her achievements.

  • She was awarded the 'ISRO Young Scientist Award' by former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
  • 'ISRO Team Award for MOM (2015)'
  • ASI Team Award'
  • 'Women Achievers in Aerospace, (2017)'
  • Indian Aerospace Technologies and Industries (SIATI).

She has been awarded the honorary degree of D.Sc. (Honorary Doctorate) by Lucknow University during the Annual Convocation 2019.
