Life Story of Ghazal Alagh, Cofounder of Mamaearth

To run the economy of any country, a successful enterprise is required and the role of entrepreneurs is most important in making that enterprise successful. The economy can never be made successful without enterprise. Both men and women used to contribute equally to keeping the economy of India better.

But there used to be a time when most of the household chores were done by women and only men used to do business. But it is not so that all the women ran the house, some also ran enterprises but their number was like salt in flour.

But today that time, that era seems to be coming back again, where women are again stepping forward as entrepreneurs and not only doing so but also proving to be successful entrepreneurs.

Today we are going to talk about one such entrepreneur who is also a successful entrepreneur and is helping other entrepreneurs to become successful.

Her name is Ghazal Alagh she is building a successful venture with her husband.

Has appeared as a shark (investor/judge) on Shark Tank Season 1. She is the co-founder of Mamaearth, a toxin-free baby care, and beauty skin care brand.

Early Life

Ghazal Alagh was born on 2 September 1988 in Chandigarh in a middle-class family. Her father's name is Kailash Sahni and her mother's name is Sunita Sahni.

Her sister's name is Sahiba Chauhan and her brother's name is Chirag Sahni.

She grew up in Chandigarh. She received her schooling from Chandigarh. She completed her graduation degree in BCA from Punjab University.

Career

After completing her BCA degree, Ghazal Alagh joined NIIT Limited Chandigarh in 2008 as a developer and then started her career as a corporate trainer. She worked as an SQL, J2ME, and Oracle instructor at NIIT.

In the year 2012, she founded a website called Diet Expert. Through this, she would give diet plans to people based on their weight, age, and lifestyle. 300 users and 2k followers joined her website. But she worked on it only for a year.

Then in the year 2013, she went to New York. There she received a degree in Modern Art and Design Applied Arts at the New York Academy of Arts.

On returning home, she exhibited her art at national and international level. Based on her love for art and her style, Ghazal Alagh is one of the top 10 female artists.

Along with her work, she also takes full care of her health. She does yoga for 30 minutes daily. She takes full care of her diet and also gets her body checkup done from time to time.

Whom to Marry

On January 28, 2011, Ghazal Alagh got married to Varun Alagh.

Varun Alagh joined Hindustan Unilever Limited in 2007 as a Business Leadership Trainee. A year later, he was promoted to Area Sales Manager and then in 2010 to Area Sales and Customer Manager. In March 2011, he was appointed Regional Brand Manager of Innovation South Asia Deodorant. He left that company in the year 2012.

In May 2013, Varun Alagh joined Coca-Cola, Gurgaon as Brand Manager. Then in April 2015, he was promoted to the position of Senior Brand Manager. He resigned in November 2016.

In the year 2016, Ghazal Alagh and Varun Alagh together established Honasa Consumer Private Limited. They launched their company's first brand Mamaearth. The brand offers natural i.e. chemical-free products like baby care, hair, and skincare.

Mamaarth's Ghazal is the only chief uncle and Varun is the only chief dad.

Honasa Company launched its second brand ‘The Derma Co’ which provides hair and skin care products. She launched her third brand ‘Aqualogica’ in November 2021, which is based on skincare products.

Ghazal Alagh and Varun Alagh welcomed their son Agastya Alagh into their lives in October 2014. In March 2022, their second son Ayaan Alagh entered their small world.

Varun Alagh along with his wife has played an important role in making Mamaearth such a big company. They are one of the most powerful business couples. Who is working together to take their company to new heights?

Founding of Mamaearth

Agastya Alagh, son of Ghazal Alagh and Varun Alagh, was suffering from a skin disease called eczema at the time of birth.

Her son was allergic to chemical products available in the market, due to which her body would turn red. The doctor advised to use chemical-free baby care products.

However it became difficult to find natural skincare products for my son. Now no compromise could be made with the health of the son. That's why he used to import such products from abroad. Which were very expensive and not easily available. Many times he would request friends and relatives who had gone abroad to get natural products for his children.

Due to this problem of his son, she got the idea of making natural childcare and skincare products. She understood that many other children and their parents might be facing this problem. Because naturally derived care products were not visible anywhere in India. For that, there was dependence on foreign companies only.

Ghazal Alagh did the research and found out why this product is not suitable for children.

The foundation of ‘Mamaarth’ was laid by Ghazal Alagh along with her husband in the year 2015.

Before starting her brand, Ghazal Alagh got around 700 women to test the product on their children. First took reviews from all the women and then launched their product in the market properly.

In 2016, she founded ‘Mamaarth’ with her husband. She branded her products vigorously through social media and YouTube. She also got her brand promoted by big YouTubers.

In 2018, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty became an investor in 'Mamaarth'. She is the brand ambassador of ‘Mamaarth’. Sara Ali Khan became the ambassador of hair and care products. She also appeared in the hair and care product ad of 'Mamaearth' with her mother Amrita Singh and grandmother Sharmila Tagore.

According to several media reports, Mamaearth is Asia's first chemical-free baby care and mother care product company.

Net Worth

The estimated income of Ghazal Alagh is Rs 18-19 crore. Her total wealth is Rs 150 crore. Their income increases by 8.4 to 17.9% every year.

Mamaarth's annual revenue is more than Rs 300 crore. Mamaarth serves more than 50 lakh customers in approximately 500 cities.

Investing in many companies also helped Ghazal Alagh increase his net worth.

As a judge on Shark Tank India Season 1, she invested in many startups.

Shark Tank India 2021 was launched in December. It is an adaptation of the popular American reality show Shark Tank.

Shark Tank India provides a platform for new entrepreneurs for their startups. Where successful entrepreneurs in their field invest in those startups and provide advice in exchange for an equity stake in their company.
